Social Influence and Group Identity

This chapter reviews research on the group identity explanation of social influence, grounded in self-categorization theory, and contrasts it with other group-based explanations, including normative interdependence, network approaches, as well approaches to persuasion influence that background (identity) processes. Although review primarily discusses recent research, its focus also invites reappraisal some classic order address basic questions about scope power explanation. The norms, moderated by identification, is compared contrasted explanations notably concept injunctive norms relation moral conviction. A range moderating factors relating individual variation, features intragroup intergroup context, important contextual variables (i.e., anonymity versus visibility, isolation copresence) are particularly relevant online new media reviewed.
